Our research

Introduction

Chemistry research work at Heriot-Watt encompasses a wide field in response to the needs of a modern technological society. The broad spectrum of interests of the research staff ranges from fundamental aspects of pure chemistry to interdisciplinary areas which involve interactions with physics, biochemistry and applied science.

Research topics are offered in the major areas of inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry and theoretical chemistry. In addition, active research groups operate in applied science including materials chemistry, polymer chemistry, solid state and surface science. Postgraduate training leading to the degrees of PhD, MPhil or MSc by research is available in all of these fields

Facilities

The department contains a range of sophisticated instrumentation that encompasses all major areas of spectroscopy and chemical characterisation. Research suites have been created for high resolution multinuclear NMR, X-ray crystallography (both single-crystal and powder), laser science, solid state and computational chemistry. Each of these areas has attracted major research funding.
