Tom Bishop

-about-

I am a post-doc working with Dr. Paolo Favaro in the VISP group of the Joint Research Institute on Signal and Image processing, School of EPS, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK.

I completed my PhD on Blind image Deconvolution in 2008 in the Institute for Digital Communications at the University of Edinburgh, supervised by James Hopgood. Previously I gained my B.A. and M.Eng. degrees in Electronic & Information Engineering from the University of Cambridge (Pembroke College) in 2004, and the M.A. degree in 2007.

-Research-

My research interests include Computational Photography/novel camera designs and Computer vision; Inverse Problems including Image Restoration, Blind Deconvolution & Superresolution; Image, texture & blur modelling, Bayesian methods; sparse models, Compressed sensing and dictionary learning.

Computational Photography

The current research project is mainly centred around Computational Photography and Light Field/Plenoptic Cameras. See more details on our Plenoptic camera here, and our papers on Plenoptic Superresolution and Plenoptic Depth estimation.

Assembly of our plenoptic camera

Our plenoptic camera is a modified medium format camera with an array of microlenses placed close to the digital back. Each microlens covers several pixels and enables us to capture a sampled light field image, which we can process to acheive digital refocusing, superresolution, and 3D depth estimation.

Texture Priors

I have developed a new image prior based around a data-driven higher-order MRF, that allows for recovery of texture and fine detail in deconvolution problems.

Blind Image Deconvolution via MCMC

During my Phd I developed a novel algorithm to restore out-of-focus and motion blurred images with unknown blur.
